Description

Offered for sale is this superb Thinline Tele-style guitar built by Zion Guitars back in 1994. This guitar was built at the old Greensboro, North Carolina shop when Ken Hoover still ran this small manufacturer of boutique electric guitars.

This guitar has a semi-hollow Alder body with an AAAA-grade Quilted Maple top with scraped top binding and a Honey Burst gloss finish. It has a one piece Maple neck with a thin C-shape and depth measurements of .82" at the 1st fret and .89" at the 12th fret. It has a lovely dark Ebony fretboard with a 12" radius, medium/jumbo fret wire and a 1.650" Tusq nut. It has a Joe Barden vintage style bridge with brass saddles and Sperzel locking tuners. The electronics include Joe Barden Danny Gatton pickups, master volume, master tone and a five-way pickup slider switch. It has a total weight of just 6.2 pounds.

Before this guitar, I had never played a Zion instrument made this investment solely on the strength of all the positive things I've read about Ken Hoover-era Zion guitars. I was not disappointed, as this guitar is amazing! It is an extremely high quality instrument and was assembled with great care using very high quality materials. It has the feel and vibe of something along the lines of a Tom Anderson or a Suhr instrument. It plays like butter and it sounds fantastic. The five-way switch allows it to cover a lot of ground giving you Tele and Strat-like tones in one guitar. Check out the brief sound sample provided - this thing cooks!

While built 24 years ago, this guitar is in near new condition. It has obviously spent most of it's life in it's case and the frets show no observable wear. It comes in it's original Zio-branded case, also in great shape, along with the tools and paperwork.

I've always been a huge fan of thinline-style guitars and this Zion can compete with the best that I have played. If the neck carve on this guitar was just a little bit bigger, I would likely be keeping it for myself! Get yourself a very cool and quite rare boutique thinline with this awesome early Zion 90 guitar. Highly recommended!
