Description

PRS guitars and Carlos Santana are historically inter-twined as Carlos was one of the first big name artists to adopt Paul's guitars for regular use and eventual endorsement. Offered here is this magnificent Private Stock version of the Santana Retro, a model that is loosely-based on one of the early guitars that Paul built for Carlos back in the 1980's.

The Santana Retro is a 24-fret, 24.5" string scale instrument. It has a Mahogany body, a Private Stock grade flame Maple top and a Mahogany neck. Fancy Abalone purfling adorns the body glue joints. It has a deeper body, neck carve, heel, nut placement and headstock shape as were found on the original guitars. The neck shape measures .875" at the first fret increasing to .95" at the twelfth. The fretboard is made of lovely dark Brazilian Rosewood with a 12" radius, with old style green Abalone bird inlays, medium frets and a 1.6875" nut width. The headstock is the old style with a Mahogany veneer, Abalone Modern Eagle inlay and Phase III locking tuners. The bridge is an unplated version of the PRS tremolo unit. The electronics include two 57/08 PAF-style humbuckers with a master volume, master tone and a three-way toggle. It is finished in Santana Yellow nitrocellulose gloss finish and weighs just 8 pounds, 4 ounces (8.25 pounds). This magnificent guitar is a mix of vintage specs and modern improvements.

Carlos Santana can play whatever he wants and he plays a guitar much like this masterpiece. Play it and listen to it for a bit and it is easy to see why Carlos called the early guitars upon which this guitar is based "acts of God!" It is a precision machine, but one that retains the raw genetics of early Gibson solid body electrics which were Carlos' choice before he could afford better. It plays almost by itself and has a voice that is reminiscent of a vintage SG or Special. While it does not begin to do this guitar justice, please check out the brief sound sample provided.

This one owner instrument was collector-owned and is in mint/near mint condition having been out of the case little since it's purchase in 2014. The frets are flawless as well. It comes in it's original PRS Private Stock paisley case, also in mint/near mint condition along with all the original paperwork, tools and drop-in trem arm. This guitar cost approximately $10K when purchased new, but this near mint 2014 example can be yours for thousands less.

This is an extremely relevant instrument in the history of PRS and rock music in general. Make this incredible, investment-grade Private Stock Santana model yours today.
