Description

I don't invest in many large bodied guitars these days, as more and more of my customers are seeking smaller, more comfortable playing instruments. That said, this beautiful Martin is one I could not pass up. Offered here is Martin Custom HJ-38 Stefan Grossman, number 109 of the 190 or so pieces built.

The SJ-38 is a 14-fret, 25.4" scale, 0000 (M) body-size guitar with the depth of a dreadnought. It has a Sitka Spruce top with forward shifted 1/4" bracing. The back and sides are are made from very high grade Madagascar Rosewood of the sort that is far more expensive today than it was when this guitar was built. It's cosmetics include: a style 45 Paua rosette; style 45 multicolored mosaic purflings; grained ivoroid binding on the top, neck and headstock; fine herringbone top trim; black and white Boltaron side and back inlays; and fingerboard inlays that are unique to this artist signature model. The Mahogany neck has a Modified V neck shape and a fully adjustable truss rod. The fretboard and belly bridge are Black Ebony. It has a 1.75" bone nut, a 16" radius bone saddle and 2-5/16" string spacing. The tuners are gold Waverlys with butterbean knobs.

As you would expect from a guitar of this size, it's power is formidable. Despite this power, it's voice remains balanced and clear. The bass notes thunder without being overbearing and the trebles are bright without being piercing and it is amazingly articulate for a guitar of this size. Please check out the brief sound sample provided for a taste of this guitar's potential. It plays divinely too, and is currently set up with light gauge strings and 12th fret string heights of 6/64" and 4/64" on the low and high E sides, respectively.

This guitar is in near mint condition. Despite being nearly a decade old, this beauty could nearly pass for new. It shows few signs of prior play and the frets remain in near new condition. It comes in it's original Geib style case which is also in near mint condition. This guitar would make an excellent candidate for the Martin Museum should they be looking for an superbly clean example of this limited edition model.

I am confident that this beautiful HJ-38 Stefan Grossman is an instrument that most any Martin aficionado would be thrilled to own and play. Make it yours today!
