Description

Offered for sale here is a Martin model you don't see all that often, a 0000-38 12-fret built in the Custom Shop in 2014. This is a Grand Auditorium-sized instrument, with a 25.4" string scale and 12 frets free of the body. It has a lightly figured Adirondack Spruce top with 5/16" scalloped X bracing and the back and sides made of straight-grained East Indian Rosewood. The body, neck and headstock are bound in white Boltaron. It has a Style 45 Abalone pearl rosette and a multi-color backstrip. The Mahogany neck has a low profile neck shape and a fully adjustable truss rod. The fretboard is Ebony with a 1.75" bone nut and Style 38 MOP dots and inlay lines. It has an Ebony belly bridge with a bone saddle and 2-1/4" spacing. The tuners are gold open gear Grovers.

The 12-fret geometry of this guitar gives a big sounding instrument even more presence. It has a huge, well-balanced voice with lots of mid and bass response without the loss of high end clarity. Please check out the brief sound sample provided for a short taste of what this beauty can do. While certainly not a small guitar, it's relatively thin (4-1/8") body depth makes it far easier to play than a dread. This guitar plays superbly and is setup with fingerpickers in mind with 12th fret string heights of 5/64" and 4/64" on the low and high E sides, respectively.

This guitar is in "excellent minus" condition. My usual hand buffing has removed almost all evidence of prior play. Only the lightest clearcoat scuffing remains, mostly on the pickguard and a bit of very light worming on the upper back of the guitar where I suspect the previous owner's neck chain pressed against the back of the guitar when playing. It is very tough to see, even close up and the included photo is of little help, but it is there. Other than this the guitar is in excellent condition and the frets show very little wear. It comes in it's original Geib style case which is in near mint condition.

A new example of this relatively rare model would cost you around $6K or more should you want to order a new one. Get this well preserved 2014 beauty for far less. A very nice Martin 12-fret indeed!
