Description

Offered is this lovely Wise River slope D by John Walker. Having worked with the likes of Ren Ferguson and Kevin Kopp and having helped found Gibson’s Montana custom shop, John is one of a small number of luthiers known for building high-end interpretations of iconic Gibson designs. This instrument is John’s take on a banner-era Gibson Jumbo.

The Wise River is a slope shouldered dreadnought with a 24-3/4” string scale and a 14-fret clear neck (20 frets total). It has an Adirondack Spruce top with back and sides of Honduran mahogany. Scalloped Adirondack bracing supports the top. The mahogany neck has a medium-sized and very soft V-shape with a first fret depth of .850”. This example has an upgraded Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, a 1-3/4” unbleached bone nut and medium frets. It also has a Brazilian rosewood bridge with 2-1/4” string spacing and fossilized Walrus bone pins.

The sound of this guitar reminds me of the old J-50 that Jorma Kaukonen has played for decades. It has a voice that is full, warm and woody. Please check out the brief sound sample included below. Unlike some old Gibsons, however, this guitar plays with ease of a modern instrument. It is nicely setup with a new set of Elixir Phosphor Bronze light gauge strings with 12th fret string heights of 5/64” on the low E side and 4/64” on the high E side.

Despite having been built in 2009, the Wise River remains in amazing condition. Just two tiny flaws (see photos) keep me from calling it mint and the frets still look like new. It comes in its original AVS case, also in superb condition.

A new Wise River with the upgrades on this guitar would cost you nearly $8K today. Get this lightly played example for thousands less and far, far less than a vintage Gibson would cost. A really sweet piece. Make it yours!
