Description

Another Gibson Recording King Ray Whitley just came in to go along with our other one. This one is in even better condition- and it is the rosewood version. A huge sounding guitar. Big, full, and articulate. These are incredible guitars and per Vintage Guitar Magazine the rosewood version is far more rare than the mahogany counterpart. Shipping totals compiled by Gibson employee Julius Bellson show the rosewood model (1027) got off to a good start, with 171 instruments shipped in ’39. In 1940, however, only nine were shipped, for a total of 180. The less-expensive mahogany model (1028) shipped 116 in ’39 and another 116 in 1940, for a total of 232. This is a killer guitar in excellent condition with original parts including original functioning tuners. It just received a fresh professional neck set at which time a new saddle was installed. Housed in a period correct tweed case. Completely original finish with no overspray or touchup. While most of Gibson's sub-brand flat tops were built to a lower standard with heavier ladder-braced tops, this model has a typical Gibson Jumbo X-brace pattern, and is crafted just as well as its full-line equivalents. The nearest equivalent to this model in Gibson's line is the equally rare J-55, the company's top 16" Jumbo flat top in 1940-41. 21,000 dollars.
