Description

This vintage 1935 Gibson Jumbo is a balanced, responsive flatpicking machine, while still being lightly built, making it easy to play fingerstyle as well. Featuring 3 non-scalloped tone bars this guitar delivers a deep, resonant sound, with a very pleasant, sympathetic set of overtones, that almost feels like its natural reverb, without getting overly complex and distracting. The neck is comfortable v-shape with a 1 3/4" nut width and a slightly wider 2 3/8" bridge spacing.

Inspired by the Hawaiian-style dreadnoughts that had been produced by both Martin and Gibson, the Jumbo model was the first 14-Fret Slope-Shoulder dreadnought, spanish-style guitar, to come out of the Gibson factory. When looking at it straight-on it looks familiar, and shares the slope-shoulder design of the later J-35s and J-45s, however when looking at it from the side the deeper body stands out, as there is very minimal taper from the tailblock to the neck block. This deeper guitar body delivers a bigger, deeper low-end sound than the typical slope-shoulder dreadnought, along with a clarity and set of overtones that isn't typical of a pre-war Gibson. This guitar also features a distinctive appointment of the 1935 Jumbos, a bound fingerboard, which was not present on the Jumbo model when it debuted in 1934.

Close examination by our repair shop leads to recommending a refret. However, frets 1-12 are low but can be played cleanly while the upper frets past the body do fret out here and there. It has been decided to maintain the originality of the instrument, allowing a future owner to make the call on a refret. The saddle slot has been filled and re-cut to improve the playability and intonation, while the bridge pins have been replaced with Ebony pins prior to arriving here in the shop. There are a pair of repaired top cracks in front of the bridge. Repaired side cracks, and a pair of repaired back cracks. There is small wood splint in the top, most likely installed at the factory and then covered by the dark burst finish, which was not uncommon. All of which have been inspected and are stable (see photos). Gorgeous original burst finish. Includes a Canadian-made Calton case.
