This amp rocks! In our opinion, Gibson vintage amps from the 50s are the diamonds in the rough of vintage amp world. This 1951 Gibson GA-50 is a remarkable amp. It’s all original except for a replaced 3-prong power cord and a few capacitors.
Though we wouldn’t have thought of this as a jazz amp, it was actually a favorite amp of both Barney Kessel and Jim Hall, two legendary jazz guitarists who had impeccable ears and high standards for tone. It does have excellent clean tone, but since our personal tastes often take us into overdrive-land, we like to crank the GA-50 and let it roar.
This amp begins to break up with the volume control at about 12 o’clock. The overdrive is similar to an early Fender Tweed, and at about 25 watts of power via twin 6L6s, it can get plenty loud. The GA-50 has its two original Jensen speakers, one 12 inch and one 8 inch, which have a lot to do with the fabulous tone of the amp.
Typical vintage Gibson rear controls. One volume for the microphone channel and one volume for the instrument channel. One microphone input, three instrument inputs. Two master treble and bass tone controls. As you probably know, the microphone channel works great for guitars and its slightly hotter than the instrument inputs.
This is your chance to own a superb vintage amp at about half the price of a comparably powered vintage Fender amp.
