It's interesting that ES-335's from 1958 to 1964 are so valuable but the values fall off a virtual cliff in 1965. This is because they did two things that didn't set well with the vintage crowd (although they were still wildly popular at the time). In 1965, they changed the nut width to 1 9/16" from 1 11/16" and they switched from a stop tail to a trapeze. The construction was still nearly identical and the pickups, while somewhat different from the revered PAF, were still really good pickups (patent sticker). The necks got pencil thin by 66 but fattened up again by 68 (although the nut width was still 1 9/16" contrary to what a well respected web site says). So, if you can handle the narrow nut, a 68 is a great way to get into vintage tone for less than a brand new 335 will cost you. In fact, this one will cost you thousands less. Trapeze bother you? No worries-this late 68 has been converted to a stop tail. Neck is deep and chunky-same measurements as a 59 (.88" at the first fret and 1.05" at the 12th). Pickups are fat and articulate. Fly in the ointment? Of course. You didn't think you were going to get a mint 68 for $2400 did you? It has a well executed headstock repair. Been there for years and is stable. It also has Grover tuners and the knobs are repro (should have witch hats). The electronics, including the pickups, the bridge and the guard are original as is the finish. Modern case.
