I've referred to 1962 PAF ES-335's as the "sleeper" among vintage 335's. The 59's get the glory and the 64's are the easiest to sell thanks to Eric Clapton and that big neck. But, generally, there are no PAFs in a 64 but a 62 often has them. Are PAFs enough? Well, no, there's the neck profile as well. The neck profile from late 60 through 61 is so slim that the necks have a bad tendency to split and back bow. By 62, they got bigger and don't have any of the problems of the 61. Slim but not the blade neck. I have had some really killer 62's and this one is right up there tone-wise. It's shows considerable player wear but it seems to have been well cared for. The frets have been replaced but the parts are all original or correct. I know that one of the tuners was changed but it matches well and is a proper 62. The bridge posts were moved back by about 1/16" which is actually a pretty functional mod. You see, in 1962, a G string was always wound, so the bridge placement was optimized for that configuration. A plain G will intonate on a stock 50's or 60's 335 if you use 10's, 11's or 12's. But if you want to use 9's or lighter, you will run out of room to intonate the G string. This eliminates that problem and is invisible (the filled holes are under the thumbwheels). There is a lot of neck wear but it is perfectly smooth. There is a big patch of buckle rash that you'll just have to deal with. You'll forget about it as soon as you fire it up. So, killer player, totally correct 62 with PAFs for under $30K. Don't snooze. Original case.
