SN: 825793. Clarence White Commemorative Edition limited to 292 instruments produced in 2001. This edition is loosely based on the 1952 D-18 Clarence played with the Kentucky Colonels. With that legendary instrument, White pioneered the use of the acoustic guitar as a solo instrument in bluegrass, one of many contributions in his incredibly short life. Though the commemorative edition has some special features the original did not have, it remains faithful to the core d-18 configuration. Variations include all the desired features of a bluegrass dread; scalloped, forward-shifted bracing, 1-3/4” nut, Adirondack top, quilted mahogany back and sides, herringbone back-strip and model 21 style bridge pins. The fretboard is free of position markers. Clarence’s signature is reproduced in pearl in the 20th fret and there’s an attractive pearl rosette. The label inside is signed by Chris Martin and Michelle White Bledsoe, Clarence’s daughter.
This is a well-cared-for example with just a few scratched on top and some shirt button scratches on the back. The current owner is an active member of the bluegrass community that lives and plays near Darrington, WA. He had the neck reset perfectly by David Ducet in Bellingham just last year. It plays perfectly with plenty of saddle for future adjustments. The neck profile is a gentle V with medium depth and the string spacing is a comfortable 2-1/4” at the saddle.
While it may not be the loudest D-18 in the room, it’ll be one of the most expressive. It has nice dynamic range, particularly on the bass end, and sparkle when strummed. An excellent player at a great price set up for a lifetime of jamming or soloing.
Comes with the original case.
